Signe Pucena (LV): Herbs and cultural heritage, Baltic expeditions -project

Interdisciplinary Art Group SERDE’s artistic research approach combines ethnographic interviews and intangible cultural heritage studies and with performative cultural production, and self-published cultural heritage booklets. This presentation will share early research in relation to the living traditions of herbs- gathering, preparing and using in Latvia. Pucena has found published materials in medical and pharmacy books, but little which combines the herbal recipies with the stories about the people who keep the tradition alive. Pucena will also introduce the midsummer Baltic expedition which SERDE will organise as part of the ‘Herbologies/Foraging Networks’ programme, open for a limited number of people to join.

Kultivator (SE): The Wedding between Art and Agriculture

As an experimental platform, Kultivator has the last five years initiated, and participated in a number of projects, exhibitions, conferences etc, where the connection between art and agriculture is explored. A network of practitioners in this field is about to take shape, and a need of a critical discourse that raises the ethical, historical and political aspects of this line of work. As an answer to this, Kultivator will arrange a meeting at their farm on Öland, and give it the form of a wedding. In their talk Malin and Mathieu will share the preparations and mapping, and connect to the question posed by Herbologies/Foraging Networks programme on whether it is possible to reconnect to traditional knowledge through contemporary information sharing, by doing the opposite; using traditional ceremonial forms to build new networks and share information.

Christina Stadlbauer (AT/BE): Honey foraging in urban environments

Parking lot daisies, green-roof-apple-trees, balcony-tomatoes – all you can eat for city-bees! The presence of honeybees beneficially influences conservation of floral species and encourages city inhabitants to re-nature their lives by greening backyards and terraces. Urban apiaries boost the city’s agricultural productivity and provide deliciously divers honey with characteristic city-scape tastes.  An exploration on how bees connect to local vegetal and animal wildlife and alter the experience of urban public spaces altogether.

IT'S A SET-UP 只是一个布局 from LAB on Vimeo.

26.3.2010 - 20.2.2011, 3. floor

In an exhibition, visitors are accustomed to watching, listening and observing art alone and with others. But what happens when the role of an observer becomes more active? What kind of an event is a set-up?

Just like contemporary art itself, the 11th collection exhibition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma is open-mindedly crossing all kinds of borders. The leading role is given to the artist as well as to the viewer. It’s a Set-up is about the experiential and participatory aspect of art, and considers such themes as time and duration, the presentation and staging of artwork, performance and human relationships. The exhibition showcases various works and techniques from 41 artists. Some of the works encourage the viewer to use other senses than those of sight and hearing and attempt to enhance the viewer’s experience of the artwork.

Invisible City Exhibition

THE INVISIBLE CITY EXHIBITION from LAB on Vimeo.

THE INVISIBLE CITY EXHIBITION
.

The Invisible City project explores the city not just as formed by physical space, but also as a collective construction, made up of the memories, desires and experiences of its inhabitants.

The city should not be conceived as a unit but rather as the sum of its inhabitants’ multiple points of views which, all combined, create a multi-faceted perspective. Thus, the city is an aggregation of public and private spaces, from which emerges a shared identity allowing us to live in it.

This project consists of a series of events, including a film screening accompanied by a live soundtrack, a workshop in public space, and an exhibition featuring work by visual artists from Barcelona (some of them artist residents or former residents from HANGAR visual arts production centre).

These events will explore different forms of exchange and interaction between the city and its inhabitants. We will look into the perception and identity of contemporary cities, and at how art can influence their transformation, asking: Do we live in a real city or in the mirage of what it should be?

Adel Abidin @Kiasma

Adel Abidin @Kiasma from LAB on Vimeo.

12.2.-25.4.2010

The Iraqi-Finnish artist Adel Abidin is a rising star in international contemporary art. His first major solo exhibition, held now in Kiasma, presents the artist’s recent work, most of which consists of video installations.

The works encourage us to reflect on culture, both our own and other people’s. In his art, Abidin focuses particularly on "themes such as cultural alienation and marginalization". The works address issues such as experiences of exclusion, gender roles and sexuality, and also life, death and the insanity of war. Central to all of Abidin's works is his use of black humour and irony.

One of the works is a large neon sign derived from the Coca-Cola logo, which Abidin presents in a mirror image. It is a reference to a rumour that made the rounds some time ago at certain Islamic websites, according to which the sign says, in Arabic, No Mohammed, No Mecca. But the artist gives the mirror image another interpretation. According to him it says To Mohammed, To Mecca. The story behind the work is an urban legend from the Arab world, which has been discredited both by the Coca-Cola Company and authorities in the Muslim world.
